Rare 1954 Rolex Submariner 6200 Fetches £200,000 at Auction

An extraordinary vintage Rolex watch, unearthed from a forgotten collection, has fetched an impressive sum at auction, selling for over 200,000 British pounds, equivalent to approximately $272,100. This 1954 Rolex Submariner 6200, a rare find with only about 300 units ever produced, was discovered by the seller among inherited items from her late uncle. Initially deemed insignificant until the Rolex branding was noticed on the dial, the watch was taken to a local jeweler who confirmed its rarity and value.

Sold through Watch Collecting, a platform specializing in high-end and luxury timepieces, the Rolex achieved a record-breaking sale with a final bid of £205,500. This sale marked it as the most expensive watch ever sold on the platform.

The Submariner 6200 is renowned for its A296 automatic movement, featuring a gilt dial and gilt Mercedes hands, all finished with the original radium luminous material. Its robust case and distinctive 8-millimeter “Big Crown” enable a depth rating of 200 meters, highlighting its design as a professional diving tool.

Adrian Hailwood, the head of Watch Collecting, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to contribute to the legacy of this remarkable 1954 Rolex Submariner. Its condition is exemplary, retaining original components and an unrestored state, showcasing the authentic wear of a 67-year-old iconic Rolex.”
