Nikken Cutlery: Samurai-Inspired Knives for Culinary Excellence

In the heart of Seki, Gifu Prefecture, Nikken Cutlery stands as a beacon of traditional samurai sword craftsmanship and innovative Japanese cutlery. Building on this rich heritage, Nikken has embarked on a new venture, crafting high-quality knives inspired by the legendary blades of three iconic Japanese swordsmen. This initiative follows their previous success with letter openers modeled after famous swords.

Launched on the Japanese crowdfunding platform Makuake, the campaign has already reached 92% of its funding goal, signaling strong support for these exceptional knives designed for both culinary and outdoor applications. The knives draw inspiration from the swords of Ryoma Sakamoto, Toshijo Hijikata, and Nobunaga Oda, with Seki’s master bladesmiths ensuring they capture the legendary sharpness associated with Japan’s historic warriors.

Ryoma Sakamoto

Ryoma Sakamoto is celebrated as a pivotal figure in Japanese history, known for his role in the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate during the Bakumatsu period. The knife inspired by his sword, Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, embodies his enduring legacy.

Toshijo Hijikata

Revered as the “Demon Vice-Commander” of the Shinsengumi, a special police force, Toshijo Hijikata’s knife design is influenced by his sword, Izumino Kami Kanseda, reflecting his formidable reputation.

Nobunaga Oda

Nobunaga Oda, a powerful feudal lord who played a crucial role in Japan’s unification during the late Sengoku period, is honored with a knife that features the motif of his favored sword, Heshikiri-Hasebe.

These knives are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, featuring authentic sword-like grips that enhance their usability in the kitchen by minimizing slippage. The addition of each swordsman’s crest further enhances their authenticity and elegance.

As the crowdfunding campaign nears its target, the dream of owning samurai sword-quality knives for culinary purposes is on the verge of becoming a reality, offering enthusiasts a unique blend of history and practicality.
