Young Entrepreneur James Turner Opens Sports Memorabilia Shop

In the heart of Newburgh, an 11-year-old entrepreneur named James Turner is making a significant impact with his sports memorabilia shop, Sports Card and Collectibles by Card Kid with Big Dave’s Collectibles. This shop is rapidly becoming a favorite destination for sports enthusiasts in the Hudson Valley.

Turner’s passion for sports cards was ignited at the tender age of six when he attended his first card show. Before establishing his Newburgh location, he successfully ran a shop in Kingston. His latest venture is a collaboration with Big Dave’s Collectibles, aiming to create an inviting atmosphere for collectors of all ages.

“My dad relocated his business, and this spot was ideal for my store. We moved all our cards here because it’s at a major intersection with lots of daily traffic,” Turner explained.

The business name evolved naturally. “We included sports and collectibles in the name, and since I was known as Card Kid, we added that too,” he said.

Beyond sports memorabilia, the store offers appraisal services for cards and collectibles. “We have Pokémon, baseball, football, and basketball cards. Whether people want boxes or singles, we have a variety of everything,” Turner shared.

Discussing the shop’s bestsellers, Turner mentioned, “Initially, Pokémon and football cards were popular, especially with the football season underway.” Among the shop’s treasures is a rare Paul Skenes autographed rookie card, a coveted item for collectors.

Despite his young age, Turner is already contemplating future growth. “Hopefully, we do well enough to open more locations or a larger store for more inventory. In Kingston, they hosted a monthly trade night with famous baseball celebrities,” he explained.

His dream celebrity visitors? “Basketball player LaMelo Ball and baseball player Paul Skenes. It would be amazing if they came here,” Turner said.

As a young business owner, Turner values the support from his friends and family. The store not only allows him to be his own boss but also helps him develop communication skills and learn the intricacies of business management. “My friends think it’s cool, and they visit. My family is proud that I opened my card shop at such a young age,” he shared.

Store hours are updated weekly outside the shop and on his Facebook page, Sports Card and Collectibles by Card Kid with Big Dave’s Collectibles. “Everyone is welcome, and there’s a special area where kids 18 and under can pick a free card on their first visit,” Turner said.

Sports Card and Collectibles by Card Kid with Big Dave’s Collectibles is conveniently located at 269 Route 17K in Newburgh.
